Simulations of planet-disc interactions using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

چکیده
We have performed Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations to study the time evolution of one and two protoplanets embedded in a protoplanetary accretion disc. We investigate accretion and migration rates of a single protoplanet depending on several parameters of the protoplanetary disc, mainly viscosity and scale height. Additionally, we consider the influence of a second protoplanet in a long time simulation and examine the migration of the two planets in the disc, especially the growth of eccentricity and chaotic behaviour. One aim of this work is to establish the feasibility of SPH for such calculations considering that usually only grid-based methods are adopted. To resolve shocks and to prevent particle penetration, we introduce a new approach for an artificial viscosity, which consists of an additional artificial bulk viscosity term in the SPHrepresentation of the Navier-Stokes equation. This allows accurate treatment of the physical kinematic viscosity to describe the shear, without the use of artificial shear viscosity.

A comparative study of disc-planet interaction
We perform numerical simulations of a disc-planet system using various grid-based and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) codes. The tests are run for a simple setup where Jupiter and Neptune mass planets on a circular orbit open a gap in a protoplanetary disc during a few hundred orbital periods. We compare the surface density contours, potential vorticity and smoothed radial profiles at sev...
متن کاملIncompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations on free surface flows
The water wave generation by wave paddle and a freely falling rigid body are examined by using an Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH). In the current ISPH method, the pressure was evaluated by solving pressure Poisson equation using a semi-implicit algorithm based on the projection scheme and the source term of pressure Poisson equation contains both of divergence free ve...
متن کاملSimulation of Cold Rolling Process Using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH)
Regarding the reported capabilities and the simplifications of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, as a mesh-free technique in numerical simulations of the deformation processes, a 2-D approach on cold rolling process was provided. Using and examining SPH on rolling process not only caused some minor developments on SPH techniques but revealed some physical realities. The chosen t...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Squeezed Flow of a Viscoplastic Material by a Three-step Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Method
In the current work, the mesh free Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, was employed to numerically investigate the transient flow of a viscoplastic material. Using this method, large deformation of the sample and its free surface boundary were captured without the cumbersome process of the grid generation. This three-step SPH scheme employs an explicit predictor-corrector technique an...
متن کاملHow initial and boundary conditions affect protoplanetary migration in a turbulent sub-Keplerian accretion disc: 2D non viscous SPH simulations
Current theories on planetary formation establish that giant planet formation should be contextual to their quick migration towards the central star due to the protoplanets-disc interactions on a timescale of the order of 10 years, for objects of nearly 10 terrestrial masses. Such a timescale should be smaller by an order of magnitude than that of gas accretion onto the protoplanet during the h...
